Growing a business takes time and effort, especially if your goal is to successfully complete a major business expansion. Among your plans should be strategies for addressing financial needs, creating infrastructure to support the expansion, acquisition of resources and supplies, and plans for the development and hiring of employees. These plans serve as a blueprint you can work off of when you’re expanding to ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible.
Reclassify Your Business
When you first set up your business you may have started out as a sole proprietorship or a partnership. As you expand, you may find that the structure that initially was the best fit for your business is no longer your best option. If that’s the case, you may need to consider reclassifying your business. S corps are worth considering for a major expansion, as they allow you to break into shareholding and offer limited liability protection. S corporations can be a bit more complicated though. Registering your business as an S corp means more regulations and tax implications. Your best move is to carefully research your classification options before making your decision.
Adapt Your Marketing
As you move to expand, you may find that you need to reassess your marketing efforts. Expanding your company means you’ll need to bring in more revenue. To do so, evaluate your current strategy, identifying its strengths and weaknesses. Analyze your target demographic. Has it changed at all? Does expanding to new locations mean you need to change how you reach out to your target audience? What new marketing opportunities are available? Are you taking advantage of business listing opportunities? All these questions, and plenty more, can help you analyze your current marketing strategy and refine it to suit your current needs.
Major business expansions aren’t easy. There’s a ton of planning and work that goes into them. You have to have strategies in place, make sure your business plan and structure is as it should be, and that you have the finances to support your expansion. You also have to make sure your marketing campaigns are ready to bring in new customers and clients that will generate new revenue to support your newly-expanded business.
